Isaac's Yellow Bracelet

When my son Isaac was little, we’d go to the YMCA to swim.
The pool was split by a rope—
shallow end on one side,
deep end on the other.
If you wanted the deep end, you had to prove it.
Jump in.
Swim across.
Come back—no struggle.
Isaac wanted the deep end.
So he took the test.
And he passed.
They gave him a little yellow bracelet—
and he wore it like a badge of honor.
Because that bracelet meant something:
There was evidence.
Now here’s what made it real…
There were times Isaac struggled in the deep end.
He couldn’t touch the bottom.
He’d get tired treading water.
And sometimes—he’d swim back to the shallow end to rest.
But never for long.
Why?
Because he had the bracelet.
He knew he belonged in the deep end.
That’s where he wanted to be.
Now here’s what’s interesting…
He had a friend—same age—
who never took the test.
No desire for the deep end.
Stayed where it was safe.
Where his feet could always touch.
No risk of going under.
Romans 8 says this:
Those who love God
are the same ones who are called according to His purpose.
Not two groups.
One.
And if that’s true—
there’s always evidence.
Not a bracelet.
Not a label.
A life that moves toward Him.
Because you can stand at the edge of the pool your whole life…
Talk about the deep end.
Say you believe in it.
Even convince yourself you’ll go there someday…
…and never move.
You can have something that looks like faith—
like one of those electric fireplaces—
It looks real.
But there’s no heat.
No movement.
No evidence.
And here’s the part people miss:
Real faith doesn’t mean you never struggle.
It means you don’t stay away.
You may drift back to the shallow end sometimes.
You may get tired.
You may feel like you’re barely staying afloat.
But you don’t settle there.
Isaac got that yellow bracelet—
and from that moment on, he had access to the deep end.
But that bracelet didn’t matter
if he just stood on the edge.
It gave him access—
but he still had to jump.
So the question is, am I living like someone who’s been called—
or someone just standing at the edge?
Is there real movement toward God…
or just the appearance of it?
Don’t overthink it.
You don’t need to clean everything up first.
stop standing on the edge…
and jump.
You were made for the deep end.
