How did we get here?

How did we get here?

I believe it’s there in every believer. That small, sometimes quiet, yet unmistakable prompting of the Spirit. A nudge. A hovering.

The Spirit was always there.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

Hovering.

Maybe that’s the word we’ve been missing. Not distant. Not absent. Hovering. Near. Waiting. Moving.

And I think if we’re honest, we’ve all experienced it.

You know that moment after someone cuts you off in traffic and anger rises up fast, hot, ready to explode… and then, just as quickly, something inside of you softens and asks, What was I so mad about?

Or the moment you say something harsh to someone you love and almost immediately feel the weight of it. The need to apologize. The conviction that what came out of your mouth didn’t belong there.

Or when you see someone struggling. Someone you don’t know. Someone you’ll probably never see again. Yet something in you says, Help them.

That’s Him.

Not coincidence.

Not weakness.

Not your conscience evolving into morality on its own.

The Holy Spirit.

Jesus called Him our Helper. Our Advocate. The Teacher. The Guide. The One who reminds us of truth and leads us toward it. He is the source of life, the living water flowing from the hearts of those who believe.

Ah… and there it is.

Those who believe.

Because somewhere along the line, many of us pause.

I know I did.

Maybe life happened. Maybe disappointment happened. Maybe pride crept in. Maybe we got distracted chasing money, comfort, control, success, relationships, approval, or simply our own way. Maybe we stopped listening because obedience became inconvenient.

And slowly, what once felt obvious became faint.

Not because the Spirit left.

Because we stopped paying attention.

The hovering never stopped. The nudging never stopped. We just became louder.

We fill every quiet space with noise. Phones. Opinions. Entertainment. Ambition. Fear. Constant movement, full calendars. And then we wonder why we struggle to hear God.

But He is still there.

Still hovering over the chaos.

Still drawing us closer.

Still convicting.

Still comforting.

Still whispering.

Still leading.

The question isn’t whether the Spirit moves.

The question is whether we’ll slow down long enough to notice.

And maybe even harder than noticing… whether we’ll obey.

Because the Christian life was never meant to simply be knowledge about God. It was meant to be life with Him. Led by Him. Dependent on Him.

Some of us have become experts at talking about Jesus while resisting the Spirit He sent to transform us.

That’s how we got here.

Not all at once.

Just one ignored nudge at a time.

But the beautiful thing about God is this: even now, the Spirit still hovers.

Still near.

Still calling.

Still ready to lead anyone willing to surrender.

Even you.

Even me.

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." Romans 8:26
